Getting Italian citizenship makes you a European Citizen. It’s possible having dual citizenship, that means that you are both American citizen and Italian (European) citizen. It opens opportunities to Europe labor market, and gives you health assistance and many other rights.
Italian Americans can apply for Italian citizenship through an Italian ancestor and under certain circumstances. We can study your eligibility requirements and documentation needed.
The Law n° 74/2025, approved by the Italian Parliament on May 23, 2025, changed the rules to get recognition of Italian citizenship iure sanguinis (by descent). Applications filed within March 27, 2025, shall be processed according to the old rules. So you can trace your lineage back to any Italian ancestor in the past and prove the absence of interruption through generations. Applications filed after 27 March, 2025, shall be subject to new rules. This reduced the iure sanguinis eligibility to few cases: 1) at least one of your parents or grandparents has to be only Italian-citizen at the time of his/her death (not naturalized abroad, no double citizenship); 2) or one of your parents has resided two consecutive years in Italy after acquiring Italian citizenship and before your birth. An opportunity is introduced for the ones who were born in Italy, or resided in Italy at least two consecutive years, and then lost Italian Citizenship. They'll be able to file a request of regaining Italian citizenship between July 1, 2025 and December 31, 2027.
