The levies planned by the European Union on US goods, in retaliation for US tariffs on steel and aluminum, have been delayed. On March 12, 2025, EU announced countermeasures in response to the US reinstating 25% tariffs on steel imports and increase of the 10% tariff on aluminum imports to 25%. The countermeasures should have come in force in two stages, the first on April 1, the second on April 13, 2025. Some tariffs should increase from 4.4% to 50% on some US products, according to the list of US products subject to the 2018 countermeasures in Regulation (EU) 2018/886, and the list of US products subject to the 2020 countermeasures in Regulation (EU) 2020/502. Other tariffs are planned on US agricultural goods. Furthermore, levies dating back to Trump's first term as US president, regarding jeans, bourbon, motorcycles and peanut butter, are also on the desk. Now, EU decided to take two weeks for negotiations. The coming into effect of the said measures has been postponed. This decision came as an attempt to "try to find a mutually agreeable resolution”, said Maros Sefcovic, EU Trade Commissioner. Anyway, businesses shall be ready to verify the classification and origin of their products according to EU regulations.
